Author and translator, and one of the most important and best-known translators of modern Arabic literature into English. He played a major role in introducing Arabic literature to English readers, being the first to translate the works of Naguib Mahfouz into English. During the last fifteen years of his life, he authored and prepared more than 30 children’s books in English. In 2007, he received the Sheikh Zayed Book Award as Cultural Personality of the Year in recognition of his services to Arabic literature.
